What Are You Willing To Lose?

Earlier this week, based on the recommendation of my new colleague and friend Jessica Commins, I joined the website This Is My Jam. I love music and I’m obsessed with finding efficient avenues for finding good new music. Joining was a no-brainer. (So join and let’s connect.)

Her Jam at the time of me joining was “What Are You Willing To Lose” by Lucero, and it remains her Jam currently. I loved the title of the song immediately, and I liked the song as well once I listened.

The video is embedded at the end of this post if you want to listen.

Here is a taste of the lyrics:

So what if all my heroes are the losing kind
Not a chance in hell but still they lay it on the line
Would you give it all away for what you want to do
Would you keep on going if you couldn’t make it through now
What are you willing to lose
O what are you willing to lose

Jessica posted about this on G+, asking her friends there what they were willing to lose. I responded thusly:

“I am willing to lose lamentations on the past and unproductive thoughts about the future in exchange for more focus and presence in the NOW.”

It’s one of my mental goals moving forward: leave the past behind and think about the future only in ways that move me forward productively and positively. There is simply too much to do and experience in the present to not be fully engaged in it.

But that’s also some pretty general, abstract stuff. It’s damn near mumbo-jumbo (even if it’s true).

So I decided to get a little bit more specific. What else am I willing to lose in pursuit of happiness? Here are a few things right off the top of my head:

Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It

This past weekend, I saw the band Stars perform at The Granada Theater in Dallas.

It was my first time seeing Stars, and it was my first show at The Granada, and overall the experience was just absolutely awesome.

Stars at The Granada Theater in Dallas, TX.

I actually hadn’t even heard of Stars, a well-established and popular band from Canada, until the girlfriend of one of my best friends posted about them on Facebook. I took a listen, liked what I heard, and became a fan.

A Sublime Song

The more I listen to one Stars song in particular, the more I absolutely love it.

The title of that song doubles as the title of this post: “Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It.”

Lyrics: “Bay of Pigs” by Rogue Valley

Rogue Valley is one of my favorite new bands, which you are well aware of if we are Facebook friends and connected on Spotify.

The first song I heard by them, “Bay of Pigs,” remains my favorite. It’s slow, almost plaintive-sounding at times, with a wonderful vocal performance from Linnea Mohn. Something about it has just mesmerized me. I don’t want to know how many times I’ve listened to it in the past week, but I wouldn’t be shocked if you told me it was 50 or 60.

Here it is:

Fair warning: prepare to get misty eyed when you watch this video.

Mike Masse is a remarkable singer, as you’ll see from the video below and when you start going through his other videos, which you will I bet.

In fact, you may already be acquainted with Masse’s work if you caught this amazing cover of Toto’s “Africa” that made its way around the web recently.

But unquestionably Masse’s best and most consequential performance is the one below, a spectacular cover of The Beatles’ “Let It Be” that Masse performed in honor of his 11-month old son Noah who, as Masse explains, was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. The song is part of a fundraiser to help the Masse family deal with this unexpected and harrowing news.

Enjoy One of the Most Triumphant Songs Ever Written (Which Is Inexplicably Underexposed)

While listening to an old playlist – 17 Essential New Songs for Spring from 2010 – I was reminded of one of the most triumphant songs that has ever been written, so I wanted to write a quick post and share it on the off chance you’ve never heard it.

The song is called “Ali in the Jungle” by The Hours. The lyrics speak for themselves, as do the beat and rhythm, both of which are triumphant, even defiant, in their own right.
