11 Good Thoughts For Your Heart From the Bob Ross ‘Happy Little Clouds’ Remix

Here is today’s must-watch video, featuring a man who needs no introduction.

Bob Ross is so awesome. And so is PBS for making this. This video didn’t just win the Internet today. It 10-run ruled it in the first inning.

And forget about just learning painting from Ross. Look at all of the lessons about life you can learn from him, just from what’s in this video.

1. Find your passion

Bob Ross’s passion is painting. For him, every day is a good day when he can indulge that passion and do what he loves to do.

For me, my passion is writing. I believe every day’s a good way when I write.

How about you? Every day’s a good day when you…what?

2. Listen to your heart

One way to find your passion, if you don’t know it already, is to listen to and trust your heart.

Painting brings good thoughts to Bob Ross’ heart. That’s how he knows he loves it, and why every day is a good day when he does it.

What are you doing when you notice good thoughts in your heart? That just might be what or who you are passionate about.

3. No limits

For a painter, there are no limits with a fresh canvas. You can build happy little clouds, happy little trees…whatever you want.

Building happiness is a good thing.

And when we find our passion and listen to our hearts, there aren’t any limits to how much of it we can build in our own lives.

4. Work hard, stay humble

I think of this painting when I hear Ross say, “You can paint with almost anything; all you have to do is practice.”

There are no limits and we can do anything…the key is to practice.

And if we stay humble and work hard we can become great at whatever we choose to do.

5. Our world is just that: ours

A painter with a blank canvas can create whatever world they choose to create.

Well, every morning we all wake up with a our own canvas. It’s not blank, but it’s not covered and dried either. We can create whatever day we want within the confines of what we’ve painted on our canvases in past days.

And if we want a new canvas? It’s possible. It’s not always practical, of course, because real life is more complicated than a painting, but we can’t ever forget that our worlds, our lives are ours. We create the lives we do with our choices.

We have that freedom. “Find freedom on this canvas.”

So if we want to change anything we just have to make different choices.

6. We can do it

This one is simple. Ross says, “Believe…that you can do it, ‘cuz you can do it; you can do it.”

And he’s right.

Again, life is more complicated than a painting. I couldn’t go play in the NBA right now just because I believe I can. So there are, of course, limits.

But if we listen to our hearts and find our passion and work hard and stay humble and make the right choices…then we can do, within reason, anything. Believe it.

7. Indulge the moment

When Ross says, “make love to the canvas” this is what I hear: live in the moment; indulge the moment; be passionate about whatever it is you’re doing.

Have a sense of love and enthusiasm for whatever it is you are engaged in.

Give it your all.

I’m 31. You are however old you are. The big canvases of our lives are pretty filled in. So we can’t change them at a moment’s notice.

But we get little mini canvases all of the time. And every task, every conversation, everything we do is a chance to indulge the moment, to “make love to the canvas.”

8. “Think like water”

I love this line.

After imploring us to “make love to the canvas” and then providing some direction (“Grab it, lift it, fluff it…layer after layer after layer…”) Ross reminds us to relax.

Even when we’re following our passions, following our hearts, we can get too caught up in the moment. We can out-think our ability to do. Paralysis by analysis. But there are simple doorways for overcoming this. I’m just not sure I’ve ever heard it phrased more eloquently than “think like water.”

“Relax, let it flow, think like water…” Ross says. So true.

Indulge the moment, and flow with it. Let’s not get stuck in our own heads.

9. No fear of failure

Perhaps my favorite Bob Ross line ever: “We don’t make mistakes; we just have happy accidents.”

Don’t fear failure.

The only way to succeed on a grand scale is to fail. It’s how we know that we are pushing ourselves to our limits. We realize what we can’t do. But by “failing” – or, more aptly, having a happy accident – we learn, and by learning we grow, and by growing we make the canvases of our lives something different than they are…or a better version of what they are.

That’s why the line that follows in the song is so appropriate: “You can do anything that you want to do.”

If we don’t fear failure, we really can.

10. “Sing along”

Life is just better when you’re singing along. It is for me anyway.

In the car, at home around the house, while working…whatever. Singing, humming, whistling, it all just puts me in a good mood.

Do you sing along with your life?

11. Enjoy life

Right after he says “Sing along,” Ross says “Have a good time.” And what better lesson to end on that this one?

Ultimately, don’t we work and seek out relationships and set goals and do all of these things so that we can ultimately have a good time?

Of course not every time in a life is meant to be a “good time,” per se. There are times when hard work is necessary, and it may not be fun. There will be times of sadness and struggle and strife.

But can’t we still enjoy life even during these more difficult times?

If we’re finding ways to bring good thoughts to our hearts, I think we can. We can certainly strive to anyway.

Life is meant to be enjoyed. Sometimes it just takes a more conscious effort to do so than we think. But it’s always worth it.

*****

bob-rossBob Ross passed away in 1995.

He, of course, had nothing to do with the creation of this video, even though the way I’ve referred to him above, often in the present tense, makes it sound like he is still alive or that he set out to teach these lessons in this order.

But these are his words and his thoughts in the video, and boy does this expertly crafted song bring them – and him – alive. He was an inspiration to so many, and beloved by so many, because the words he said and the way he said them made you feel better about yourself and about life.

Bob Ross put a lot of good thoughts into all of our hearts.

He painted a positive, optimistic picture about life through the process of teaching us all about painting. The lessons endure because they are honest, uplifting, and rooted in love. The best lessons always are.

What a great video tribute this is that PBS put together. Any day is a good day for inspiration like this.

Lyrics: “Happy Little Clouds” – Bob Ross Remixed

I believe
I believe
Every day’s a good day when you paint

I believe
I believe
It’ll bring a lot of good thoughts to your heart.

I believe
I believe
Every day’s a good day when you paint

I believe
I believe
It’ll bring a lot of good thoughts to your heart.

Let’s build a happy little cloud
Let’s build some happy little trees
There are no limits here
You start out by believing here

You can almost paint with anything
All you have to do is practice
There are limits here
You start out by believing here

This is your world
You’re the creator
Find freedom on this canvas
Believe, that you can do it,
‘Cuz you can do it.
You can do it.

Give it a little touch
Give it a little push
Make love to the canvas

Give it a little touch
Give it a little push
Caress it, very gently

Grab it, lift it, fluff it,
You can go on and on and on
Back and forth, back and forth
Layer after layer after layer

Let’s build a happy little cloud
Let’s build some happy little trees
There are no limits here
You start out by believing here

This is your world
You’re the creator
Find freedom on this canvas
Believe, that you can do it,
‘Cuz you can do it.
You can do it.

Relax, let it flow,
Think like water,
Relax, let it flow,
You can go on and on and on

We don’t make mistakes,
We just have happy accidents,
You can do anything that you want to do
Total power
Sing along
Have a good time

This is your world
You’re the creator
Find freedom on this canvas
Believe, that you can do it,
‘Cuz you can do it.
You can do it.

I believe
I believe
Every day’s a good day when you paint

I believe
I believe
It’ll bring a lot of good thoughts to your heart.

I believe
I believe
Every day’s a good day when you paint

I believe
I believe
It’ll bring a lot of good thoughts to your heart.
